Hanuman and the Sanjivani Mountain

Traditional account from the Ramayana · Source: Valmiki Ramayana, Yuddha Kanda (traditional account) · Public domain narrative

In the great war at Lanka, Lakshmana, the devoted brother of Rama, fell gravely wounded on the battlefield. The physician Sushena said that only one herb could save him — the Sanjivani, which grew on a far mountain in the Himalayas — and it had to be brought before sunrise.

Without a moment's hesitation, Hanuman leapt into the sky and flew across the land to the distant peak. But when he arrived, he found a whole hillside of glowing herbs, and could not tell which one was the Sanjivani.

Rather than waste precious time, Hanuman did something only he would dare: he set his feet, lifted the entire mountain in his hands, and carried it back through the night sky so the physician himself could choose the herb.

The medicine was found in time, and Lakshmana opened his eyes. Hanuman had asked for nothing, doubted nothing, and feared nothing — his only thought had been the life he was sent to save.

Life lesson

When the goal is to help another, give everything you have — and let nothing slow you down.
