कृष्ण ने उठाया गोवर्धन पर्वत
Krishna Lifts Govardhan Hill
Traditional account from the Bhagavata Purana · Source: Bhagavata Purana, Canto 10 (traditional account) · Public domain narrative
Each year the cowherds of Vrindavan held a great offering to Indra, lord of the rains, hoping for good monsoons. The young Krishna gently asked them to look again: it was Govardhan Hill and their own herds and fields that fed and sheltered them every day. Let the worship honour what truly sustained them, he said.
The villagers agreed and offered their devotion to Govardhan instead. But Indra, his pride stung, sent down a terrifying storm — sheets of rain meant to drown the whole region.
As the people huddled in fear, Krishna walked to Govardhan Hill, lifted it lightly upon the little finger of his left hand, and held it aloft like a vast umbrella. The villagers, with their cattle, gathered beneath it, dry and safe, while the rains thundered around them.
For seven days the storm raged, and for seven days the boy held the hill without tiring. At last Indra understood, and his pride dissolved. Krishna set the hill down gently — having shown that true greatness protects, and does not demand.
Life lesson
Care for what truly sustains you, and stand quietly with those who need shelter.
